East Anglian Bonsai Show 2018

The first East Anglian Bonsai Show was held on the 9th September 2018 at Kesgrave community centre near Ipswich. The idea had been talked about for a few years and brought up on various occasions when clubs from around the area would meet up at other shows etc, there were not any shows in this part of the country. It was agreed that the clubs that took part would share the cost and any profit made. In the end, four clubs took part - Ipswich Bonsai Society, Norfolk Bonsai Association, Southend Bonsai Society, and Bury and Cambridge Club.

The four Clubs put on a good standard of show and the paying public enjoyed the show with over 130 people coming through the doors. Steve McKee was kind enough to judge for us and show his wonderful Yew. The results as follows:

  • Best Club display - Norfolk Bonsai Association
  • Public vote - Juniper by Dave Tilbury

And one tree from each club was chosen:

  • Ipswich - Dave Tull  English Elm
  • Southend - Dave Smith  Larch
  • Norfolk - Richard Marjoram Juniper Squamata
  • Bury - Derek Archer Beech

We were well supported by a number of traders who between them filled over 20 tables and I believe were happy with the day.

There was a performance of Japanese dance and swordsmanship by Tensho Dojo Ginkenshibudo twice during the day which people appreciated.

We are hoping this will be the first of what could become an annual show building on this first one with more clubs joining us. The show may move around the area being hosted by the various clubs, The decision will be made very soon. If there are any other clubs reading this who may be interested in joining us. Suffolk Show 2018

The Ipswich Bonsai Society were invited for the first time to exhibit at the Suffolk Show earlier in the year. On a very hot day in the marquee, members of the society built the staging on the Monday bringing their trees on the Tuesday ready for the two-day show. To say we were pleased with the result was an understatement. We have learned a number of things if we are hopefully invited back next year; the main thing is to have some sort of barrier between little hands and our trees. All our work was rewarded with a Gold Medal - a most satisfying experience for all involved.
